Men and women slept in the same barracks on the plantation with no provision made to separate them.161 Hurston describes an antidote for curing what she calls “flooding,” or excessive menstrual bleeding. (There is no indication that Hurston suffered from a similar challenge.)162

Grated nutmeg

Pinch of alum

Quart of boiling water

One grated nutmeg, pinch of alum in a quart of water (cooked). Take one-half glass three times daily.163
